Exercise #1 - ISD Model

The class activity on the Model was very beneficial. The paired discussion forced me to rethink some of the ideas I was toying with originally. As a result, these are the revised ideas I have for creating my model.

Context: Teacher Training: Supervision of Practicum(Grenada)

I would like to design a program that would lead to the reorganizing of the supervision of the student teachers' practicum. There are complaints from student teachers that they are not adequately supervised. The reorganization would include the institution of master teachers in the primary(elementary) schools. I am particularly interested in master teachers being assigned to the student teachers while they are on their practicum and for one year after returning to the classroom following the two year training program.

System:
The Teacher Education Department: Teacher Training Program

Suprasystem:
The Ministry Of Education: Primary school system
The University of the West Indies. This institution is reponsible for the design and supervision of the teacher education program in the English speaking Caribbean.

Two subsystems:
Teacher training program materials
Student teachers
Senior teachers(potential master teachers)

Two information channels:
University of the West Indies personnel
Education officers

One example of a subsystem interface:
Teacher educators

Monica,

Great start to creating your model. It appears that you have identified all of the parts within the system. I wonder if the learners should be included as a sub-system. The interface between student teacher and the learner will play a large role in determining the student teacher's proficiency. I believe this would be considered feedback. Parents may also be accounted for within the system.

What would be stated goal for this new program? Would it be better teachers? How would this be measured? Will this play a role in how teachers are certified in the future?

Andrew,
Thanks for the suggestions.
1)I agree that the learners should be included as a subsystem. However,I am not sure sure about the inclusion of parents(??).
2)The goal of the program is to help student teachers in the effective transfer of the knowledge and skills gained in training to the classroom.
3)The master teacher will use an observation checklist to rate the student teachers' performance. This will be taken into account when determining the teachers' eligibility for certification.

Monica,
I am not sure the parent component would add value to your model because the main problem is focused on the master teacher and student teacher. Maybe you could find a place for it later, but I wouldn't worry about it at this point. =)
Seems like a model that would have a lot of value once you are finished.
